Symvisio IV

“Circling the Square”

Oil on Canvas, 54” x 246”, 2002

The theme of this Symvisio was inspired by the American Indian mythology, and its compositional structure by the well-known four notes of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. Essentially, the composition is made up of some five hundred twelve circular arcs -- and hence its name. The symbol at the center of each unfoldment represents a season: eagle, coyote, bear, and water buffalo represent spring, summer, autumn, and winter, respectively. The four well-known notes of the second movement of the Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony are represented almond, mauve, yellow, and rust within each unfoldment. Also, the pattern of these colors across the unfoldments represents the pattern of the sound of the four notes.
